Reader’s Question:
I’m from Boston, Massachusetts. Is it true that my gender or marital status can affect the price of automobile insurance premiums that are quoted to me? A friend said that most insurance companies will offer cheaper quotes to married people. Is this legal?

Hi Candice. I used to live in Massachusetts as well although not in Boston. Sadly, it is a practice for some insurance companies to factor in a persons gender or marital status, or both when coming up with a quotation for an automobile insurance policy. Generally individuals that are single, divorced or widowed will be quoted a higher rate than that of a married person. They attribute this to actuarial studies that find that married people are more responsible than those that are single. Same goes for women being more responsible drivers than men. Of course, this is not always a fair assumption. As to the legality, there’s good news and bad news. Good news is, the state of Massachusetts prohibits automotive insurers from using a persons civil status in pricing for car insurance. This would not apply to you. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the other states in the US.
Please note though that not all insurance companies put this into practice. If you plan on moving anytime soon, the best way to get a fair insurance policy would be to shop around and compare prices amongst different insurance companies. I suggest you snoop around online and see where you can get the best value for your money.
