Reader’s Question:

Since the cost of living is getting more expensive recently, I decided not to use my car very frequently to lower my expenses on gas. Could I also get cheap vehicle insurance here in Indiana for public transit users?

Lara

Anderson, IN

The recent economic crisis really has such a worldwide effect that people are already trying everything to lower the costs of their household expenses. People are now trying all sorts of stuff just to save more money, and the same goes for vehicle maintenance.

Now, my answer to your question is yes, being a public transit user, you can get cheap vehicle insurance there in Indiana. If you use your car as seldom as possible, this reduces the risk of you involving yourself and your vehicle in a car accident. Because of this, your vehicle insurance premium may go down. You just have to check with your vehicle insurance provider. And also, if you are going to ask for discounts, you would have to prove that you indeed use public transit more often than you drive your vehicle.

You might be wondering why this is so. Vehicle insurance companies calculate the risk of a client getting into an accident and therefore making claims. If you drive your car often, you are automatically opening yourself and your vehicle to the dangers of the road. When you get into an accident, you’ll make claims. So, at that instant, the vehicle insurance company providing your coverage will have to lose money to pay for the damages and the medical bills incurred. This makes your vehicle insurance premium relatively higher as compared to just leaving your car in the garage and commuting to wherever your destination is.

I only suggest that besides having the basic liability coverage requirements there in Indiana, you keep your comprehensive vehicle insurance coverage because this will insure your vehicle for any damages it might have while in the premises of your own house.

Gap Car Insurance Eugene Oregon OR

Reader’s Question:

My partner told me that if I am to get or lease a new car here in Eugene, Oregon, I should get gap insurance. But what exactly is gap insurance?

Lucas

Eugene, OR

Well, Lucas, your partner is right. Actually, gap insurance is the best way to fully protect your investment. Gap insurance is very important because standard comprehensive and collision auto insurance policies only cover the price that a seller of the vehicle would sell and a willing buyer would buy under current market conditions without being under duress or threat. This can go to as little as 80% of the real value of what you actually paid for your car.

What this means is that if ever you get yourself in a car accident, and you car is declared a total loss, you might get in trouble because it is possible for you to end up paying off a loan on a car that you can’t even drive.

Gap insurance protects you from this type of scenario. What a gap insurance policy does is it covers the amount that is between what you owe on your automobile and what your auto insurance carrier says it is worth.

On the other hand, if you are just leasing your car, the leasing company will most probably require a gap insurance policy.

Gap insurance policies also work well to insure you in the event that your new car gets stolen. You see, new vehicles are more likely to be attracted to new vehicles. In the event that your car gets stolen, the situation is identical to an at-fault accident on your part, wherein your comprehensive insurance coverage shall pay for the value of your vehicle but not necessarily the amount that you loaned from the bank.

Auto gap insurance policy is not really something that you shall need forever. It’s just something to give you peace of mind and driving security during your first years of driving there in Eugene, Oregon.

Car Insurance Premium Arvada, Colorado CO

Reader’s Question:

I wasn’t able to pay my car’s insurance premium last week here in Arvada, Colorado. What will happen? Are they going to cancel my policy?

Merrill

Arvada, Colorado

Merrill, well, I understand your position because sometimes these things just happen. Anyway, to answer your question, as far as I know, all of the states here in this country have their own particular set of rules and regulations that govern auto insurance policies. Therefore, for cancellation of automobile insurance policies, your state’s laws surely have some requirements that auto insurance companies follow there in Arvada, Colorado. What you should really do is ask your auto insurance provider to get some information. But in case, you cannot do this for some reason (since you are here on the Internet asking this question), here is some information to give you some idea:

Legally, your auto insurance company has the right to cancel your vehicle’s insurance policy if you are not able to pay them. But they have to send you the required notice for this before they can cancel your insurance. Different companies have different procedures for this. Some auto insurance companies may send you an overdue notice which asks you to pay your dues with an additional late fee. What other companies do is they send you a cancellation notice which gives you a deadline and says that if you make the payment before the said deadline, your auto insurance coverage shall be considered as reinstated and shall remain in effect.

In any case, your auto insurance company has to send you a notice before they could cancel your auto insurance policy.

In the event that your auto insurance provider cancels your auto insurance policy, it is possible for your premium to get reinstated after the effective cancelation date if you pay the overdue premium with any fees that your company requires. However, I do not think that any accidents that you are involved in shall be covered during that period between the effective cancellation date and the date of reinstatement.

I suggest that you call your auto insurance company in order to settle this matter as early as possible.

Auto Insurance Quote Boston, Massachusetts MA

Reader’s Question:

I’m from Boston, Massachusetts. Is it true that my gender or marital status can affect the price of automobile insurance premiums that are quoted to me? A friend said that most insurance companies will offer cheaper quotes to married people. Is this legal?

Candice

Boston, MA

Hi Candice. I used to live in Massachusetts as well although not in Boston. Sadly, it is a practice for some insurance companies to factor in a persons gender or marital status, or both when coming up with a quotation for an automobile insurance policy. Generally individuals that are single, divorced or widowed will be quoted a higher rate than that of a married person. They attribute this to actuarial studies that find that married people are more responsible than those that are single. Same goes for women being more responsible drivers than men. Of course, this is not always a fair assumption. As to the legality, there’s good news and bad news. Good news is, the state of Massachusetts prohibits automotive insurers from using a persons civil status in pricing for car insurance. This would not apply to you. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the other states in the US.

Please note though that not all insurance companies put this into practice. If you plan on moving anytime soon, the best way to get a fair insurance policy would be to shop around and compare prices amongst different insurance companies. I suggest you snoop around online and see where you can get the best value for your money.
